In Character Information
character name: Finnick Odair
Fandom: The Hunger Games
Timeline: Midway through Mockingjay, just before Peeta and Annie are rescued.
character's age: 24
powers, skills, pets and equipment: He’s got decent survival skills -- firemaking, fishing, improvising weapons, all that fun stuff. He’s extremely handy with a trident and making nets or tying knots, being from a fishing district, so there’s that. Finnick is also, notably, extremely handsome. It’s one of the reasons he’s a well-known victor, aside from the young age when he won the Hunger Games. He’s accomplished in lying and keeping secrets, and was at one point a pretty decent spy. His power in-game will be breathing underwater.
canon history: http://thehungergames.wikia.com/wiki/Finnick_Odair
personality: When we first encounter Finnick, all we hear of him is what Katniss knows. He is one of the most handsome and desired of all the victors of the Hunger Games, and (apparently) takes pleasure in being mysterious and seductive. He deals in secrets and, to all appearances, fully enjoys the pampered lifestyle that people are accustomed to in the Capitol.
As Katniss gets to know him better, we find out that this is (mostly) an act. Normally, Finnick has a tendency to be charming, slightly silly, and extremely determined. He flirts with most everyone, though generally just to tease them. Underneath all the games he has to keep going, he is really a good sort of guy. He fights for what he knows is right, even throughout ridiculously stressful and trying times, like fighting in the arena. If he’s a friend to someone, he will support them as long as he possibly can, even at the expense of himself. He is tenacious and stubborn, but you sort of have to be when you’re in the arena. Finnick is intelligent, usually, when he’s not busy being slightly crazy. He works well under pressure, as anyone who has watched him in the arena knows. He has cultivated various masks -- you have to, when you are as sought after a victor as he is. Even his ‘normal’ personality is somewhat of a mask.
The Capitol has, to put it nicely, done a number on Finnick mentally. He was forced into prostitution after winning his own Hunger Games -- the government threatened to torture the only people he truly cared about. This is, unfortunately, common practice where victors are concerned. It was worse for Finnick simply because he is so very good-looking, everyone in the Capitol wanted a piece of him. This made him, understandably, suspicious of most everyone and everything connected to the Capitol, including other victors. At least, those he didn’t know personally. He still manages to stay in contact with his home district, though, and has found himself in love with one Annie Cresta, another former victor of the arena. She is possibly worse off than Finnick, having been driven insane by the death of the other tribute from district 4 in her version of the Games. Finnick doesn’t mind, though, and she is basically the only person left that he really loves. As of the third book in the series, the Capitol’s threats of torture have come to pass. Finnick is terrified on behalf of his girlfriend, guilty, and trying to deal with the aftermath of having participated in yet another Hunger Games. He is definitely not in the best of mental states, and is classified as ‘emotionally disoriented’ by the doctors of the district he is currently a resident of. As a result of this, he needs something to keep himself grounded, so to speak. His thing of choice is tying knots -- it’s comforting, and reminds him of home, keeps his mind off of all the horrible things that are going on in the Capitol. Without the knots and rope, it is difficult for him to remain focused, but he is trying.
why do you feel this character would be appropriate to the setting?
Well, he’s already got awesome survival skills, seeing as he survived two Hunger Games. I’d also like for him to hang out with castmates, because we don’t get to see nearly enough of him and Katniss together in the books, in my opinion. It’d be interesting to see how he reacts to somewhere that is entirely unconnected with the Capitol and any of the districts, as living in almost-starvation and having to prostitute himself has become sort of a way of life for him. I’d like to see what he does when just left to his own devices for once.
Writing Samples
Network Post Sample:
[There's an extremely gorgeous young man staring at the Forge, more than a bit disoriented. He is just about half-naked under the hospital gown he's in, frowning some. This isn't District 13. Nor does it look like anywhere he's ever seen before. Maybe it's just a side effect of the drugs? He shakes his head a bit, and some of the confusion in his face goes away, once he realizes it’s not a hallucination.]
This isn’t -- [He starts, then trails off, looking around cautiously.] How did I get here? This isn’t district 13.
[He turns his attention to the Forge after another quick glance around, and pokes at it.]
Hello? This is a weird-looking menu. [He’s not exactly hungry, though, and used to ignoring it when he is, so that gets left hanging, too. He frowns again, and then there’s a look of determination.]
Is there a girl named Katniss Everdeen here?
Third Person Sample:
This wasn’t the Capitol. That much was clear, the fabrics weren’t fine enough and the decor wasn’t gaudy enough. Nor was it his little underground hospital room back in 13, it was too nice to be even that. For the first time in his life, he was somewhere untouched by the government of Panem. He doesn’t notice that yet, however, Finnick is too lost in his own drug-hazed mind to pay much attention to anything aside from the fact that this is different.
He inspects his clothing -- the little of it there is. That, at least, is familiar. A hospital gown, a pair of shorts underneath. Maybe he’s just been stuck in a different hospital? District 13 could have gotten tired of all his relapses, he supposes, but he has no rope to speak of. Nothing to distract himself. But he is physically safe for the moment, so his eyes automatically track to the next possible threat.
The room is empty, save for a device next to the bed. It looks like one of the devices from the Capitol, the ones they were given to order meals. Maybe he could get through to someone that way, find out what’s happening and why he’s here. More importantly, he could find out if Annie is here, or if anyone knows of her. The room lurches a little as Finnick stands and lunges for the Forge, then re-situates himself on the bed.
First priority is Annie, he tells himself firmly. Don’t get distracted. Second is wherever the hell this is. He has grown too used to having a rope over the last few months, too dependent on his knots to ground himself. It is difficult to be without it, so he’s hoping giving himself a mental talking-to will do the trick.
Do it. Snow can’t hurt you here. Probably. With a sigh, Finnick picks up the Forge and activates it.
Anything else? HI GUYS. >_>
